Def:: increase IOP(intraocular pressure) above normal..>21 mmHg {N=12-20mmHg}
Causes:
- Open-angle glaucoma : increase R to fluid outfllow through trabecular space into Canal of Schlemm.
- Angle-closure glaucoma: forward movmnt of Iris..>>>block the drainage.
- Sometimes at Normal IOP:: due to changes in optic nerve make it more susceptible to P changes.
Importances:
- Can cause blindness >>> compress optic nerve & retinal A>>>retinal atrophy, severe eye pain and blindness.
- Can cause disturbance in focusing mech. of eye for near vision.
Treatments :
- Drugs :
- ACETAZOLMIDE (carbonic Anhydrase Enzym Inhibitor)>>>>> decrease aqueous humour secretion
- ParasympathoMIMETIC ( ESERINE / PILOCARPINE )>>>open space of Fontana>>>increase flow
- Surgical : >>>open space of trabeculae.
