Glaucoma...Let's Revised...


Def:: increase IOP(intraocular pressure) above normal..>21 mmHg {N=12-20mmHg}



Causes: 

  1. Open-angle glaucoma : increase R to fluid outfllow through trabecular space into Canal of Schlemm.
  2. Angle-closure glaucoma: forward movmnt of Iris..>>>block the drainage.
  3. Sometimes at Normal IOP:: due to changes in optic nerve make it more susceptible to P changes.
Importances:
  1. Can cause blindness >>> compress optic nerve & retinal A>>>retinal atrophy, severe eye pain and blindness.
  2. Can cause disturbance in focusing mech. of eye for near vision
Treatments : 
  • Drugs : 
  1. ACETAZOLMIDE (carbonic Anhydrase Enzym Inhibitor)>>>>> decrease aqueous humour secretion
  2. ParasympathoMIMETIC ( ESERINE / PILOCARPINE )>>>open space of Fontana>>>increase flow
  • Surgical : >>>open space of trabeculae.
